Home Exercise: An Important Part of Your Physical Therapy Program

February 24, 2021

People go to physical therapy for a host of reasons: to reduce or eliminate pain, avoid surgery or recover from it, sports injuries, mobility issues and more. But to truly get the most benefit from your physical therapy treatments is to follow up with home exercises that are given to you by your PT specialist.

Physical therapy is all about restoring pain-free living to patients whose physical capabilities have been compromised in some way. At the office of The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center, our skilled professionals are dedicated to your well-being — and will work with you to help reduce pain, improve or restore mobility, and stay active regardless of age.

Home exercise, as a complement to your physical therapy program, requires a commitment. There are many reasons people tend to avoid this critical part of care — including lack of ambition and busy schedules — but the fact remains that home exercises set the foundation for an overall successful physical therapy program in the following ways:

  1. The more you do at home, but more you can achieve at your PT sessions.
  2. You’re likely to regain function sooner and relieve pain quicker:
  3. A home exercise program is sometimes the beginning of a new active lifestyle.
  4. Home exercises continued after discharge may help avoid recurrence of the original problem.
  5. Home exercises can lead to permanent, positive habits.

Home exercises may feel uncomfortable, but they should never be painful. Pain is an indication that you are doing something wrong and can potentially make your condition worse. Our physical therapists will work with you to ensure you are using the proper form so that you will be getting the most benefit from your home-based regime.

At the office of The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center, we’re dedicated to providing the highest quality of skilled physical therapy care. For more information on how we can help rid you of the physical limitations that are holding you back, give us a call today.
