Could Your Knee Pain be Caused by IT Band Syndrome? See a Physical Therapist

May 26, 2021

You’re experiencing knee pain when climbing or descending stairs, running, or riding your bicycle. Your doctor believes the problem may be coming from your iliotibial band. So, what is this band, and what can you do to keep it from sidelining you from your favorite activities?

At the offices of The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center, our board-certified physical therapists are trained in healing injuries to the iliotibial, or IT, band, a cord of soft tissue that stretches down the side of your thigh from your pelvis to your knee. We collaborate with our patients and their doctors to pinpoint the trouble spots, and understand that all the individual parts of the knee need to work together to support proper mechanics. Each patient receives a thorough examination and assessment, and is then guided through a custom-made stretching and exercise plan designed to reduce pain, restore proper range of motion, and promote a return to the activities they love.

Iliotibial band syndrome is an inflammation and irritation that occurs due to friction between the IT band and other muscles, bones and soft tissue during repetitive bending and straightening of the knee. Poor alignment and muscle imbalances of the leg and lower body also can be contributing factors.

IT band syndrome is one of the most common overuse injuries of the leg, particularly in endurance sports, and sometimes happens when a person begins a new exercise routine without warming up properly. It also occurs among people who spend long periods in the same positions such as sitting or standing, or repeating the same movements incuding squatting, kneeling or climbing. Symptoms include a stabbing pain or swelling along the outside of the knee, tightness and soreness at the outside of the hip, and pain going up or down stairs.

Don’t let knee pain prevent you from enjoying the healthy, active life you love. Contact the friendly, knowledgeable staff at the offices of The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center today for a consultation.
