Trigger finger is primarily caused by an inflammation of the finger’s tendon sheath. It can occur in any of our fingers, including the thumb, and is characterized by stiffness (particularly in the morning), a clicking or popping feeling, and tenderness at the joint. The affected finger may lock when bent, only to pop straight again. Sometimes the bent finger can’t even be straightened. More than one of your fingers can be affected, as well as both hands. People with jobs or hobbies that involve repetitive grasping are at increased risk, as are those with diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. Women are more commonly affected.
