Make the Most of Your First Visit to a Physical Therapist

August 24, 2021

As with many undertakings in life, your likelihood of success relies heavily on good preparation. The same applies to your first visit to physical therapists. These specialists are experts on how the human body’s intricate network of tendons, muscles, tissue and ligaments work well together—and how to relieve and reduce pain when they don’t work well together. Physical therapists improve their patients’ quality of life through hands-on care, education and movements designed to rehabilitate.

At the offices of The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center, our skilled professionals will work with you to reduce your discomfort and help you regain strength and mobility. Our team of certified experts know exactly how to make your recovery steady and effective.

Here are some things to write down and take with you to optimize your initial visit.

  • Questions for your physical therapist.
  • Your symptoms and how long you’ve had them; start with the area that is the most troublesome.
  • If your pain is better or worse when you move a certain way or are in a particular position, such as standing or sitting.
  • If your pain lessens or intensifies at certain times of the day.
  • Significant facts about your medical history, even if you believe there’s no connection.
  • All prescribed and over-the-counter medications you take on a regular basis or have taken within the past 30 days; don’t leave out vitamins and supplements.
  • Anything you think might be associated with your condition, such as a recent stressful situation, accident, injury and any medical conditions your parents or siblings have.

A few more tips: Wear stretchy clothes; bring a list of your doctors and others who provide your healthcare; if you wear them, bring along your eyeglasses or hearing aid; and have the results of any lab work or imaging with you.

At the office of The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center, we utilize a variety of techniques designed to benefit people of all ages—from young people to senior citizens. In addition to increasing flexibility and range of motion, our treatments improve blood circulation, enhance posture and even help with stress relief.
