Staying Active As We Age: How Physical Therapy Can Help

October 27, 2022

Among the top challenges faced by senior citizens in our country are maintaining balance, mobility, and preventing conditions like osteoarthritis from compromising the ability to remain active and complete everyday tasks. Of course, the underlying issues here are the desire to remain independent and enjoy a high quality of life. The physical therapist at The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center is acutely aware of these priorities, and has the training and experience to build strength and confidence among our older clients.

Maintaining optimal fitness no matter our age has become increasingly possible due to medical and scientific advances, and we now expect to be able to enjoy the activities we love well into our golden years. As our muscles and joints lose some of their strength over time, it’s more crucial than ever to build and maintain the body’s conditioning and endurance. Fall prevention is also of utmost importance in preventing disabling injuries.

At our clean, state-of-the-art facility, our experienced staff is equipped to provide treatments and exercise programs specially geared toward our senior clients. Our initial evaluation takes into consideration each person’s medical history and fitness level before arriving at a customized program. If pain is a factor, we utilize natural techniques to provide relief, without the use of medication. A stretching routine restores flexibility to tight muscles and aligns joints to prepare you for exercises targeting strength and balance. To promote cardiovascular health and good circulation, a gradual training program using our treadmill, stationary bike or other equipment may be introduced.

It is increasingly important to prevent muscle atrophy from occurring by staying active as we age. Exercise is also considered to be a vital part of preventing cognitive decline. Our physical therapist at The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center is uniquely trained to understand and address the challenges our senior citizens face. Let’s keep moving into the future, together! Please contact us to arrange an evaluation.
