Pickleballers Face Some Common Injury Risks

November 28, 2022

Pickleball has become America’s fastest growing sport, with courts popping up all over. The sport offers a hardy workout with lower impact than tennis, making it especially attractive to senior citizens. But as our physical therapist at The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center can attest, the vast popularity of pickleball has also led to a spate of injuries among players who’ve perhaps latched onto the sport too quickly, played too often or didn’t prepare correctly.

Attaining the proper fitness level and flexibility are the keys to avoiding a sports injury, and we have the experience and state-of-the-art equipment to prepare athletes of any age to enjoy an activity like pickleball. But if you’ve already sustained one of the injuries associated with this sport, such as lower back pain, Achilles tendon strains, shoulder or rotator cuff pain, and tennis elbow, our fully licensed and accredited physical therapist can help relieve the discomfort and build strength, flexibility and range of motion. Our goal is to get you back in the game — stronger and more fit than before.

Working with your other healthcare providers, our work begins with a comprehensive evaluation of your medical history and overall health and fitness level. We’ll pinpoint the source of your injury and devise a personal treatment plan that includes pain-relieving therapies, gentle stretching and then work up to muscle and joint strengthening exercises focusing on key areas impacted during pickleball, tennis and other sports. We’ll simultaneously target your aerobic fitness, which is a bedrock component of athletic participation. Our one-on-one sessions will provide you with a plan to stay healthy while enjoying your favorite pursuits for years to come.

If a sports-related injury from pickleball or another activity is causing you pain and keeping you on the sidelines, our physical therapist at The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center will get you back in the game, no matter your age. Please contact our office to schedule an evaluation.
